XeRR
- The Center for Xenobiotic Risk
Research (Zentrum für Fremdstoffrisiko-Forschung) is an interregional Competence Center
created to strengthen the collaboration of research groups
committed to research in toxicology and related fields in
the regions of Zurich, Basel, Bern and Constance, aiming
at a comprehensive analysis of chemical risks to humans
and the environment.
The XeRR was created to strengthen the collaboration of
research groups in the area of Zurich working in experimental and clinical toxicology in
human and veterinary medicine, ecotoxicology, environmental hygiene, environmental and
safety technology, social and preventive medicine, forensic medicine, and related
sciences, aiming at a comprehensive analysis of chemical risks to humans and the
environment. The Center replaces and extends the earlier "Environmental Toxicology
Network Zurich".

- to support research on biological effects of xenobiotics in humans, animals and
microorganisms, on product life cycle and safety technology, and on socio-economic
implications of chemical risks,
- to promote interdisciplinary approaches in environmental risk research and to strengthen
the links between basic research and problem-oriented research,
- to assist in the coordination of teaching in toxicology and environmental safety at the
University of Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels,
- to establish an information network allowing the rapid and competent investigation of
problems arising in environmental toxicology,
- to foster collaboration with federal and cantonal offices and the communication with the
public,
- to enhance collaborations with industry and insurance companies,
- to assist in the development of national and international collaboration.
The Center increase the awareness of environmental toxicology and risk assessment as
an indispensable part of sustainable development.
