Third Party funds

An increasing share of the research at the University of Zurich is financed by third party funds. Indeed, bigger research projects are hardly fundable without third party contributions. Furthermore it is a scientific distinction for the researchers if they receive funds which were awarded on a competitive basis. The Swiss National Science Foundation, our national research funding institution, plays the most important role in this respect. The European Research Funding Schemes (framework program with international cooperation activities and the projects of the European Research Council) gain an increased importance. The Swiss National Science Foundation and the European Union evaluate the projects based on peer reviews. Apart from these two funding institutions, other funding agencies and foundations grant substantial funds, and clinical studies are financed separately.

Projects supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)

The project database of the SNSF conveys an overview on projects supported by the SNSF. The following diagrams compare the number of supported projects in independent research according to research disciplines between the University of Zurich, The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ) and the University of Basel.

SNF-Projekte Abteilung II (E)

SNF-Projekte Abteilung III (E)

Projects supported by a EU Framework Programme

Projects at the University of Zurich supported by the 6thand the 7th Framework Programme are compiled by EU GrantsAccess according to faculties.

Volume of third party funding

The total of third party funds spent in a year is shown according to faculties in the diagram below. Apart from SNSF projects and EU projects, money from other funding institutions and foundations is included, as well as funding from the Research Fund of the University of Zurich and clinical studies funding.
