Physician and founder of the Swiss School of Nurses

The Main Library – Medicine Careum presents an exhibition on the Swiss nursing pioneer Anna Heer from 18 February to 30 August 2019 to mark the 100th anniversary of her death. Anna Heer was one of the early medical students at the University of Zurich. In 1901, she founded the Swiss School of Nurses (Schweizerische Pflegerinnenschule) and the associated Women’s Hospital in Zurich.

For the first time in Switzerland, the school offered young women the opportunity to train as nurses without entering a religious community. All her life, Anna Heer has been committed to promote women as professionals in medicine. The women’s hospital was completely under female leadership – an amazing success story.

Interviews with the historian Verena E. Müller complement the exhibition.

Announcement: The Main Library – Medicine Careum invites you to a reading with Verena E. Müller on 27 February 2019 at 6 p.m. in the Careum Bistro. The historian – known as the biographer of the first Swiss doctor Marie Heim Vögtlin – will read from her upcoming biography of Anna Heer. The event is open to the public. Admission is free.
