Who has to write a DMP – and who doesn’t?

Since October 2017, the SNSF requires all researchers applying for research funding to submit a data management plan (DMP). In general, each research proposal must be accompanied by a DMP. So far so clear. But what about projects that involve more than one applicant? And what about projects that simply do not generate any data? We have compiled the most important regulations.

DMPs must also be created for cross-border cooperation projects. Different regulations apply depending on the cooperation partner.

  • Some research funding agencies in European countries do not yet require DMPs. For projects with Polish, Slovenian, Belgian, Luxembourgish, German or French research colleagues, the cooperation partner based in Switzerland must therefore submit a DMP. The DMP must describe the research data of the entire project, not just the part of the data that is used or generated in Switzerland.
  • For cooperations with Austria: If a DMP has already been submitted to the Austrian Science Fund FWF, it can also be entered in mySNF. To do this, simply upload the PDF of the DMP to mySNF at ″Other Annexes″.
  • With the Sinergia funding programme, the SNSF specifically supports cooperation between two to four working groups from different disciplines, whereby in projects with three or more participants one participant may be resident abroad. The Sinergia application also includes a DMP. For a Sinergia cooperation project, only one DMP has to be created that describes the entire project. This is entered in the mySNF form. It is technically not possible for the cooperation partners to submit individual DMPs. The next deadline for submitting a grant application for Sinergia is 1 June 2019.

Who doesn’t have to write a DMP?

In fact, there are few projects for which the SNSF does currently not expect a DMP.

  • For projects in which no research data is generated, processed or re-used no DMP has to be written. This is rarely the case and must be explained in detail.
  • Furthermore, for projects for which a DMP has already been created (e.g. by a cooperation partner in another country) that meets the SNSF’s requirements, no further DMP has to be created.
