On 16.9.2019 the Digital Society Initiative (DSI) invited Pernille Tranberg, co-founder of the Data Ethics Forum and co-author of the book Data Ethics, to the UZH Digital Forum. Her credo is not to blindly trust digitalization and algorithms. She is particularly sceptical about data-gathering companies such as Google and Facebook. Everyone can and should decide more consciously about the data traces they want to leave behind.

Interested parties have various alternatives at their disposal, here is a selection:

  • Search engines: Swisscows promises not to store the data of users or create profiles. Swisscows only relies on its own servers operated in Switzerland for this purpose. Startpage and DuckDuckGo also pursue similar objectives.
  • Web browser: Mozilla Firefox has long been an established browser that respects the privacy of Internet users. Less well-known is the Bavarian browser CLIQZ. This browser promises fairness and openness towards users.
  • Messenger: The Swiss Messenger called Wire, which offers end-to-end encryption and is available free of charge for both Android and the IOS, promises to follow EU data protection standards. An alternative is called Threema.
