ORCID iD – Not only “be unique”, but also “remain identifiable”

Martin Brändle (IT specialist for ZORA) and André Hoffmann (long-term archiving for ZORA) from the Main Library were recently interviewed by the ORCID team about the integration of ORCID in ZORA. In the blog post the motives as well as the technical, legal and organisational challenges are described. In addition, two important aspects of ORCID are described:

The integration of ORCID has enabled ZORA to support the lifelong mobility of researchers.

A research career is per se fluctuating: PhD students start their research and publication activities and finish their dissertations; professors start a career at one university and can be appointed by another. These fluctuations/follow-ups pose a challenge for a library. Against this background, it is particularly important to communicate to senior researchers what added value ORCID offers to their research group and to each individual.

One of the strengths of ORCID iD is that it can technically bundle the publications of researchers throughout their careers.

When changing institutions, researchers are interested in migrating their publication data to the new repository. These migrations can be supported by repository owners (and also ORCID) offering standardised interfaces for data exchange and migration formats well suited for ORCID (e.g. DataCite Metadata Schema).
