Students don’t read? – A SoTL project in a sociology class

Ariane Bertogg, Soziologisches Institut:

Reading is an essential part of the curriculum in arts and social sciences. However, investigations into reading-based learning as a process are still sparse. Moreover, reading and understanding is often only measured indirectly, or research needs to rely on students‘ self-reports. The present article draws on a SoTL project conducted in a sociology seminar in spring 2017. Based on an ideal typical model of a reading-based learning process, the data collected and analysed capture a multidimensional multi-perspective view on the learning process and its outcomes. As an innovation, the empirical part also considers students‘ activity on the online-learning platform. Students´ performances exhibit a substantial “learning effect”, which strengthens the hypothesis of a circular reading-based learning process. Moreover, the distribution of the platform-generated online-activity data matches the distribution of other measures pertaining to reading. Interestingly, though, the learning outcomes are better in weeks where fewer students attended class, and there seems to be no relation between the workload, i.e., the number of pages due, and the quality of the outcomes.
