Abstract

The Phd thesis is focusing on how settlements schemes or “colonisation” schemes have produced different forms of violence and contested claims over space before, during and after the civil war in Sri Lanka. The research looks at understanding the historical genealogy of the “colonisation” schemes, including how these sites were contested, how different political and military actors utilised settlers as tools in this settlement process, and the current situation in these settlement sites after the end of the civil war; looking at the Sinhalese perspectives, their everyday practices, livelihood strategies and the role of the military in re-establishing of the sites post-2009.
