Shanghai Ranking 2016: UZH Maintains Its 54th Overall Ranking

Every year, the Shanghai Ranking compares over 1,000 universities from all over the world. In the 2016 edition of the ranking, the University of Zurich once again numbers among the 100 best universities in the world, maintaining the previous year’s rank of 54.

As in 2015, the University of Zurich achieved the rank of 54 in the Shanghai Ranking, and is thus one of the 100 best universities in the world. ETH Zurich remains the best higher education institution in continental Europe, and improved its rank from the 20th to the 19th place. Swiss universities found among the best in the world include the University of Geneva, at rank 53, and ETH Lausanne, at rank 92.

As in other large university rankings, American universities dominate the top 20 places in this year’s Shanghai Ranking, with Harvard in the top position. The Shanghai Jiao Tong University began conducting its Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2003. The survey compares over 1,000 universities worldwide on the basis of six indicators, including the number of Nobel Prize and Field Medal awarded (alumni or currently employed researchers), the number of publications in scholarly journals, or how often publications by UZH scholars are cited.
