QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016

In 2016, the University of Zurich again achieved pleasing results in the QS subject rankings: Not only was it named among the world’s 50 best universities in four subjects, it also ranked among the top 100 in fourteen others. In Switzerland, UZH was named as the best university in eleven subjects and numbered among the top three in eighteen additional fields of study. The results confirm that University of Zurich is an attractive institution – for both students and instructors.

The UZH study programs in veterinary medicine and dental medicine achieved particularly strong results. Both attained rankings of 25th in the world, with veterinary medicine moving up seven places from its 2015 standing. UZH also rated among the top 50 schools for Medicine (44th) and Economics & Econometrics (48th). This means that, for the first time, the University of Zurich is among the 50 best universities in the world in four different programs of study.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject covers a total of 33 programs of study. UZH offers 26 of the subjects analyzed, and in over half of them – fourteen in all – the University numbers among the world’s 100 best higher education institutions:

A comparison of all Swiss higher education institutions highlights the University of Zurich’s strengths on a national level. The QS Ranking named UZH Switzerland’s best university in the following subjects:

  • Anthropology (rated for the first time)
  • Archaeology (rated for the first time)
  • English Language and Literature
  • History (improved from second to first place)
  • Media and Communication Science
  • Medicine
  • Education Science
  • Psychology
  • Law
  • Veterinary Medicine

When only subjects offered at UZH are considered, the University is consistently among the top three in Switzerland.

There are certainly many good reasons to study at the University of Zurich: The opportunity to combine a wide range of subject areas where UZH is one of the world’s best universities – and number one in Switzerland – is outstanding.

Note on Methodology

It is important to note that the University of Zurich achieved overall better results in the bibliometric indicators (citations and h-index) than in the reputation surveys. The latter are, however, more strongly weighted. As in past years, this means that UZH is (even) better than its reputation.
