Saving Energy Together

You can already contribute to saving energy through your behavior and thus help avoid potential shortages.

Ways to save energy at the workplace

  1. Turn off appliances: Turn off your coffee maker and appliances completely after you use them.
  2. Always turn off lights: Make sure that all the lights are turned off in unused rooms.
  3. Keep radiators clear: Warm air must be able to circulate. Make sure that radiators are not obstructed by furniture, tables or paper pads.

Ways to save energy with office IT

  1. Shut down computers, monitors and other devices: Devices on standby consume a lot of electricity. Switch off your computer and monitor completely after work instead of leaving them on standby. It is also worth switching off other devices such as your own local printer or scanner completely.
  2. Reduce screen brightness: You can save energy by turning down the brightness of the screen or putting it into dark mode (only for OLED displays).
  3. Switch to shared multifunction printers: If possible, avoid local printers altogether and use multifunction printers that are shared with several people instead. This can save electricity for multiple devices.
  4. Centralise servers: Use the infrastructure of Central IT instead of running your own servers. Virtualising servers can save costs as well as electricity, and may also improve availability.

Energy-saving options for laboratories

  1. Always switch off lab equipment: Laboratory equipment on standby consumes a lot of power. Always turn off your equipment once you've finished using it.
  2. Always turn off lights: Make sure that all the lights are turned off in unused rooms.
  3. Fill autoclaves and washers completely: Half-filled autoclaves and washers require a lot of energy. Make sure they are always completely full.
  4. Adjust temperatures in ultra-low temperature freezers and refrigerators: Check the temperatures in your ultra-low temperature freezers and refrigerators. Many samples can be stored at -70 °C. Adjusting from -80 °C to -70 °C will save about 20% power.
  5. Check the contents in the ultra-low temperature freezers and refrigerators: Are there samples in your ultra-low temperature freezers and refrigerators that you no longer need? Get rid of them! Check to see if you can pool samples from multiple ultra-low freezers and refrigerators. The most energy can be saved by turning off equipment
  6. Defrost refrigerators and freezers: De-ice refrigerators, cold rooms and freezers to improve energy efficiency.
