Special Education with focus on Society, Participation, and Disability

Prof. Dr. Ingeborg Hedderich

At the center of our research interest is the theoretical and empirical analysis of social and societal processes of participation and exclusion with regards to disability. Focusing the aspect of participation, the whole lifespan – from early childhood to high age – is subject of interest. This includes the analysis of professions in the field of special education, institutions for people with disabilities, and support systems.

Special research fields are:

  • Inclusion and migration
  • Health and burnout
  • Early childhood and inclusion
  • Participatory research
  • International special education

Within the scope of our activities in research and teaching, we emphasize the interdisciplinary and international aspects of our field. Taking into account the complexity of the category "disability" in social and societal contexts, we integrate knowledge and theoretical models of related social and cultural sciences into our mainly educational perspective.
