Teaching and Research Interests

Political Communication, Journalism and News, Comparative International Communication Research

Bio Sketch

I am Full Professor of International & Comparative Media Research at the University of Zurich. Until 2019, I also held a part-time Adjunct Professorship in the Department of Media and Communication at the University of Oslo. I have spent several years at universities in the United States, either as tenure-track assistant professor (U of Missouri-Columbia) or as visiting professor (U of Oklahoma-Norman; U of Texas-Austin; U of California-San Diego). I received my first degree from City University London in International Journalism and had internships at The Independent newspaper and CNN’s World Business Today program. While working on my dissertation, I was full-time researcher at three German universities (Mainz, Mannheim, and Munich). Today, my research focuses on cross-national studies of news journalism and political communication. My recent publications fall into several broad categories:

  • Conceptual contributions to comparative (political) communication research as a new subfield of our discipline
  • Mediatization of politics
  • Relationship between political populism and the media
  • News cultures and journalistic traditions in Western media systems
  • Democratic news performance of online media; future of digital (algorithmic) journalism
  • News consumption and the effects on political knowledge, participation, selective exposure and polarization
  • Spread and effects of misinformation, and resilience against it
  • Professionalization of political publicity (‘spin doctoring’) and on its deconstruction by the news media (‘metacoverage’)

In 2019, I was elected “Fellow” of the International Communication Association (ICA) “in recognition of distinguished scholarly contributions to the broad field of communications”.

Apart from research, I am also involved in improving the infrastructures in our field. I was Chair of the Political Communication Section of ECREA and I am now Vice Chair of the Political Communication Division of ICA. Previously I served as Chair of ICA’s Journalism Studies Division. I was member of the steering committee of an EU-funded COST-Network on Populist Political Communication, and I enjoy tremendously my involvement in the Network of European Political Communication Scholars (NEPOCS) which I co-founded. In Zurich, I was Co-Director of the NCCR Democracy, a National Center of Competence in Research studying the impact of globalization and mediatization on Western democracies. In addition to acquiring valuable management experience, these engagements also helped me broaden my network of international collaborations. My backbone is the fantastic research group I have here in Zurich which makes me come to work with a smile in my face every day.
