About

Dr. Minh Hao Nguyen is interested in studying digital media use, digital disconnection, and health and wellbeing. She currently works as a Senior Teaching and Research Associate (Oberassistentin) at the Internet Use & Society Division of the Department of Communication and Media Research (IKMZ), University of Zurich. Starting from 2021, she will be a Marie Curie-Sklodowska Action (MSCA) Fellow at the University of Zurich.

Dr. Nguyen's research interests include the content, uses, and consequences of new media technologies (e.g., the Internet, SNS, mobile technologies) for health and wellbeing in an increasingly digitizing society. For instance, in a recent project she explored why and how people disconnect from social media in context of their wellbeing. In 2020, she received a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) Fellowship from the European Commission to study how digital disconnection strategies affects young adults’ wellbeing using mobile experience sampling methods and a panel survey. In her work she aims to move beyond traditional research methods, for instance by integrating behavioral tracking data with self-report measures.

Dr. Nguyen obtained her BSc in International Communication and Media from the Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2012, and earned her MSc in Communication Science (research, cum laude) from the University of Amsterdam in 2014. In 2019, she received her doctorate (PhD, cum laude) from the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR), University of Amsterdam. In her dissertation, she investigated the uses and effects of tailored online health information for older adults and cancer patients combining multiple methods and sources of data (survey research, experiments, a randomized controlled field trial, content analysis, and website tracking data). A central component to this work is the interplay between online and offline communication channels, as online behaviors can have offline consequences and vice versa.
