Biographical Note

Thomas N. Friemel is head of the division on Media Use and Media Effects at the Department of Communication and Media Research at the University of Zurich (Switzerland).

Beside media use and effects his research interests are centered on health communication and social network analysis. Together with his team he investigates the theoretical and methodical challenges as well as the societal impact of digitalization.

Thomas Friemel regularly teaches courses and holds workshops at other Universities and consults with international and national organizations and companies. He is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Health Communication and author of the books “Medienwirkungsforschung” (2017, 6th ed.), “Sozialpsychologie der Mediennutzung” (2013), “Kommunikationskampagnen im Gesundheitsbereich” (2020, 3rd ed.), and editor of multiple books and journal special issues on social network analysis.

He received a master degree (Media and Communication Research, Economics, and Social Psychology) in 2004 and a PhD in Media and Communication Research from the University of Zurich. Previous appointments include professorships in Germany at the University of Bremen (2013-2016) and Augsburg University (2011-2012). From 2009 to 2019 he was a lecturer at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) and he has been visiting scholar at various leading institutes in the USA including Harvard University (Department of Sociology), the University of Pennsylvania (Annenberg School for Communication), and the National Institutes of Health, as well as in China (Renmin University Beijing), and the Netherlands (University of Groningen, Faculty of Behavioral and Social Sciences).
