Prof. Lawrence O. Gostin, Visiting Professor FS 2015

Lawrence O. Gostin is University Professor of global health law at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. and Professor of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He directs the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law in Washington D.C and is the Director of the Center for Law & the Public’s Health at Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Universities. Lawrence O. Gostin has been a visiting professor at renowned universities worldwide (for example in Oxford (2005-2013), Sydney (2009) and Manchester (2011)). His research expertise comprises public health at national and international level, but also political sciences, ethics and medicine. Prof. Gostin is the Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center on Public Health Law & Human Rights. He is currently engaged in a major international initiative on global health governance that aims at creating a “Framework Convention on Global Health”- a multilateral treaty ensuring “basic survival needs” for the world’s poor. This endeavor is endorsed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki Moon. Prof. Gostin holds numerous editorial appointments in leading academic journals throughout the world (f.ex. with the Journal of the American Medical Association). Furthermore, he has published an impressive amount of books and articles as well as contributed to various legal initiatives in the USA and the U.K. Lawrence O. Gostin’s latest books are: Global Health Law (Harvard University Press, 2014); Public Health Law and Ethics: A Reader (University of California Press, 2nd ed., 2010); Public Health Law: Power, Duty, Restraint (University of California Press, 2nd ed. 2008); Principles of Mental Health Law & Practice (Oxford University Press, 2010).

Prof. Dr. Colin B. Picker, Visiting Professor FS 2015

Colin B. Picker is Professor for International Trade/International Economic Law, International Law and Comparative Law at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia; furthermore, he is Associate Dean for International Affairs of the Law Faculty. Before moving to Australia, Professor Picker has been a Professor of Law at the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Law. His wide-ranging publications mainly cover the areas of International Economic Law and Comparative Law. Professor Picker was one of the founders and was founding Executive Vice-President (from 2008-2014) of the Society of International Economic Law, a global academic organization for International Economic Law. He has also been active in many other professional organizations. His most remarkable books are the PhD thesis „The Value of Comparative and Legal Cultural Analysis of International Economic Law“ and the co-autored volume „Comparative Legal Traditions: Texts, Materials and Cases on Western Law, 4th Edition 2014 (with Marie Ann Glendon and Paolo Carozza).
