About the Dies academicus

Historical Background

The University of Zurich was officially founded on a rainy day in April. The exact date was 29 April 1833, and the first Dies academicus was celebrated four years later.

Ever since, the day has been an established ritual at the University of Zurich. The President delivers an address and reads from his yearly report; guests of honor are welcomed and the University grants honorary doctorates to distinguished researchers and teachers.

Each year, the UZH faculties present annual awards to PhD candidates or students for works of outstanding scholarship. In addition, the delegates of the Privatdozents, the teaching and research assistants, and the students are given an opportunity to speak.

After the celebrations, official guests are invited to a banquet.

Dies academicus is traditionally celebrated on the last Saturday in April.
