Right to Confer a Doctorate and Right of Supervision

The right to confer a doctorate is the right to supervise a doctorate up until the point at which the doctoral degree is awarded. It includes supervision, examination and grading of the PhD thesis, and approval of PhD defenses. There is a faculty-internal and a faculty-external right to confer a doctorate (PromVO 2019, § 8-10).

Professors (Group 1)

Emeritus Yes, provided that the dissertation project was taken on before retirement and can be completed within five years after retirement. Application to the Graduate School required (form (PDF, 1 MB)).
After moving to another university No (see external right to confer a doctorate: Principal supervision no longer possible, even for projects started).

Professors comprise full and associate professors, assistant professors with or without tenure track, externally funded professors, and the following associated professors:

  • Professors at ETH Zurich's Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences
  • Prof. Flurin Condrau (Faculty of Medicine)
  • Prof. Ulrich Woitek (Faculty of Business, Economics, and Informatics)
