Forschungsschwerpunkt

Subproject: The Reformation Discourse on the Epistle to the Ephesians

This subproject deals with the historical and intellectual setting of the Reformers' commentaries, specifically with regard to the (from today's perspective) Deutero-Pauline Epistle to the Ephesians. Using a micro-historical approach as well as cultural and social-historical methods, the goal of this project is to answer the question of how the selected commentaries may be understood as an expression of different social and religious identities of Reformation discourse in the 16th century: What (different) argumentation structures are supported by the Letter to the Ephesians? How are alternative and syncretic concepts of religion dealt with? In what ways do the Reformers' commentaries differ or overlap and what narratives can be found?

The wider catchment area of the Swiss Reformation shall be included. In addition to the geographically wide-ranging area of investigation, counter-Reformation authors and religious currents such as Anabaptism will also be taken into account for comparative analysis using different types of sources.

The Reformation will be considered as a multifaceted frame of reference in which inhomogeneous, yet to be differentiated narratives may be identified and which can be grasped in their (religious) historical, social- and discourse-historical foundation. This subproject contributes to the interdisciplinary overall project "16th Century Exegesis of Paul" by including the religious-scientific and historical background of the tradition of interpretation.
