Gender in University and Society (GENiUS)

GENiUS

GENiUS (Gender in University and Society) is an informal Swiss-Arab Network of academics specialized in the field of Gender Studies in and on the Arab region, established in 2017. The network aims at fostering scientific exchange on the levels of research, teaching and institution building. In order to create a forum of exchange and dialogue in knowledge production across disciplinary, linguistic and regional boundaries, the network organizes a series of workshops on varying relevant topics.

The first international GENiUS-workshop took place in April 2017 at the University of Zurich (Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies – Gender Studies). It was devoted to the topic of “Concepts that matter! Terminologies of Women and Gender in Transnational Perspective”. This resulted from discussions that were taken up during an exploratory workshop that was held in Zurich in March 2016 under the title of “Feminism and Theory in the Arab World”.

Launch of PRO GED, a project "Promoting Gender Equality and Diversity through Shared Knowledge Production"!

Within its COFER funding programme aimed at developing Consortia for Education and Research, the Swissuniversities Development and Cooperation Network (SUDAC) has recently selected PRO GED, a project that aims at "Promoting Gender Equality and Diversity through Shared Knowledge Production" by fostering scientific exchange on the levels of research, education and institution building in the field of gender and diversity.

It is a joint cooperation between three Swiss Institutions of Higher Education (the University of Zurich as the leading house with the University of Geneva and the Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz as official partners) and several official partners in the Middle East and North Africa (the ISIS Center for Women and Development and the International Institute for Languages and Cultures, INLAC, in Fez/Morocco; the Women and Memory Forum in Cairo/Egypt; the Institute for Women's Studies in the Arab World, IWSAW; and the Department of Social Sciences, DSS, at the Lebanese American University in Beirut/Lebanon).

PRO GED is coordinated by the Chair for Gender Studies and Islamic Studies at the University of Zurich, with its decidedly non-Western focus and its firmly established national, international and regional networks. This Consortium was built by several partners involved within GENiUS, and will enable the network to further develop its activities.
