Modules

If you have any questions about the modules at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (PhF), you will find the most important information on this page.

Bachelor’s theses

Before starting the Bachelor's thesis, you need to agree on a topic with a supervisor. Make sure all the requirements for booking are met. Also consult the module description of your study program on this matter. The supervisor teaches in the major or mono degree program in which the thesis is written.

You can book the Bachelor's thesis during the module booking period. After the end of the module booking period, you will receive an e-mail to your UZH address asking you to log in to our website. There you will enter the provisional title of your Bachelor's thesis and the name of your supervisor.

You must submit your Bachelor's thesis to your supervisor no later than 1 December for Fall Semester or 1 June for Spring Semester. If you exceed this deadline, the module will be considered "failed" and it will be deemed a failed attempt.

After the deadline you will receive an e-mail (to your UZH address) to log in to our website to enter the definitive title of your thesis.

If you notice before the deadline that you are unable to complete the thesis, you have two options for submitting a request:

  • Extension of the deadline for submission of the assessment
  • Withdrawal from assessment

We can only extend a deadline for a short period of time. In case of further extensions on compelling grounds, we will cancel the module. You will then have to book the Bachelor's thesis again with a new topic.
To submit the request for extension, find out the relevant offices on the websites of the departments. If in doubt, you can address your request to your academic advisor.

To cancel the module, proceed in the same way as when withdrawing from an assessment.

Booking pre-Master's modules

If you have already earned at least 120 ECTS credits in your Bachelor's degree program, you are entitled to complete pre-Master's modules from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. You can pre-book a maximum of 30 ECTS credits. You can book these yourself during the module booking period.

Not all Master's modules are suitable for pre-booking. The module catalogues show suitable compulsory and core-elective modules. These are marked with «Dieses Modul ist als vorgezogenes Mastermodul geeignet». The departments determine each semester which elective modules are suitable. This information can be found on the websites of the departments or on request from the academic advisor. «Teaching Diploma» modules cannot be pre-booked. The academic advisor will answer your questions on this. If you book Master's modules that cannot be pre-booked, they will be canceled.

The Departmental Coordination for Mobility are responsible for pre-booking Master's modules for incoming mobility students. Please contact them if you want to book Pre-Master's modules.

Language courses for students with mandatory language acquisition

In some study programs you acquire language competencies in the mandatory part of your academic education. The Language Center of UZH and ETHZ (SUEZ) offers select courses that cover these compulsory modules. You book these modules directly at the Language Center. To do so, you must select the target group «PhF-Studierende mit Spracherwerbspflicht» (Arts and Social Sciences students with language proficiency requirements) on the SUEZ website. You cannot use other courses at the Language Center to cover and be credited for the mandatory language requirement. For more information, please visit the Language Center website.

Master’s theses

Before starting the Master's thesis, you need to agree on a topic with a supervisor. Make sure all the requirements for booking are met. Also consult the module description of your study program on this matter. The supervisor must be employed at UZH in the semester in which the Master's thesis is booked.

You can book the Master's thesis during the module booking period. After the end of the module booking period, you will receive an e-mail to your UZH address asking you to log in to our website. There you will enter the provisional title of your Master's thesis and the name of your supervisor.

You must submit your Master's thesis to your supervisor no later than 1 December for Fall Semester or 1 June for Spring Semester.

To submit the request for extension, find out the relevant offices on the websites of the departments. If in doubt, you can address your request to your academic advisor.

To cancel the module, proceed in the same way as when withdrawing from an assessment.

Print copies of Master’s theses must no longer be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs. They are no longer retained at Zentralbibliothek Zurich.

Module booking process and deadlines

You can only book modules within the deadlines. Only a valid booking entitles you to complete the module. When you book the module, you are automatically registered for the assessment.

You cannot book, change or cancel modules after the deadlines.

During the waiting list progression period, you can book available places in request modules directly, even if you did not request the module during the request period. If you do not wish to participate in a module, cancel the booking to free your place on the waiting list. By doing so, you allow other students to book these modules.

You can only cancel two-semester modules within the cancellation period of the first semester. If you do not complete the assessment, you will be deemed to have failed the module.

You’ll find basic information on booking modules under Module Booking on the UZH for Students website. If you have any questions regarding module selection, please contact the academic advisor of your program.

Module selection and timetable

PhF offers a variety of modules each semester. But how do you make the right choice? In these two videos Jenny explains what you should look out for when making your selection.

Tips for module selection

Module selection: Example

Olat

First semester students must actively register on OLAT immediately after enrolling. There you will receive all important information from the teaching staff about the courses. (You can find instructions in the Olat user manual).

In the following semesters you will automatically get access to the corresponding OLAT course when booking a module. Book the modules early. This way you will get access to all relevant information of the course in good time.

Registering for a course via OLAT does not release you from having to book the module in via the module booking tool. The only way to enter a module is via the module booking system. Registration in OLAT alone is not sufficient and does not entitle you to complete the assessment.

In case of problems please contact your instructors or OLAT Support directly.

Podcasts and livestreaming

The information sheet Podcasts and Livestreaming at UZH: Information for Students from the Multimedia & E-Learning Services (MELS) department of Central IT contains important information about podcasts and livestreaming. Without attending courses on site and taking your own notes you run the rist of missing important information.

Two-semester modules

You can only book and cancel two-semester modules in the first semester. You cannot cancel these modules in the second semester.
Module booking for the second semester takes place automatically. The booked two-semester modules are displayed in the student portal in the app "My modules". They only appear on the transcript of records after they have been graded.
For some modules, the second semester only involves writing a paper. In the second semester the module remains booked until the module is graded. In consultation with the module coordinators, you can submit the paper and have it graded during the first semester. Please note the deadline for submitting grades of the semester in question.

Withdrawal from university

Registering for graduation does not automatically result in deregistration from UZH. You must apply for this separately. All information on deregistration can be found on theUZH for Students website.
