"Gold Standards" of Science: Should Politics Meddle?

Podiumsdiskussion mit Prof. Ulrich Dirnagl (Charité Berlin), Dr. Hannah Hilligardt (Universität Bern) und Prof. Martin Reinhart (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin)

Donnerstag, 11. Dezember 2025, 18:15 Uhr bis 19:45 Uhr
Rämistrasse 71, 8006 Zürich, KOL G-201

In May 2025, US president Trump issued an executive order entitled "Restoring Gold Standard Science". It sets out criteria meant to ensure that publicly funded research is "impartial", "trustworthy", "for the public good", and not "politicized". In the panel discussion, three experts will consider some of the wider political and philosophical implications that this type of regulation might have for the conduct of science in a liberal society. Is defining good scientific practice a legitimate function of government? Or is it an instance of political meddling that should raise concerns about academic freedom and the autonomy of scientific research?
