Theory and History of Photography at the Institute of Art History

The Center for Studies in the Theory and History of Photography (TGF) was established in 2006 – thanks to the initiative of the Dr. Carlo Fleischmann Foundation – in order to initiate an academic exchange between international scholars and junior researchers. The study programs at the Institute of Art History therefore have a special focus on the theory and history of photography, contributing fundamentally to the exploration of the historical and theoretical backgrounds and the historical relevance of the medium.

The courses focus on photography as a global phenomenon, as both a documentary and artistic medium. Our goal is to mediate and explore the history, the theoretical potential, and the historiographical relevance of analog and digital photography.

With research-oriented courses, lecture series, and international guest lecturers, this Center offers an intensive theoretical and practice-oriented examination of the medium of photography.

Furthermore, aspects of contemporary photographic practice – including experiments in the darkroom – as well as curatorial practice are explored. Every year, we invite a visiting artist or gallerist to thematize their own work in context of a seminar or exercise group.

We collaborate with museums and archives to offer a lively and innovative exchange, and to encourage networks between students and international scholars.

The activities at the Center for Studies in the Theory and History of Photography are made possible thanks to the generous support by the Dr. Carlo Fleischmann-Stiftung.
