Until the end of August, the Main Library – Medicine Careum will host the exhibition “Anna Heer (1863-1918)”. It was realized in collaboration with the historian Verena E. Müller, who wrote a biography of the Zurich nursing pioneer. Her biography “Anna Heer (1863-1918)”, published by efef-Verlag, is now available and will soon be on loan in the library.

Reservations via Library Catalogue are already possible.

Anna Heer was one of the first female medical students at the University of Zurich. In 1901 she founded the Swiss School of Nursing and the associated Women’s Hospital. For the first time, young women were able to take up the profession of nurse without having to commit themselves religiously. Throughout her life, Anna Heer was committed to women’s education and the professionalization of nursing care.

Verena E. Müller has succeeded in writing a carefully researched biography. Despite incomplete sources, she tells the unusual story of this strong-willed woman in a gripping and lively tone with many original quotations. The book is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the beginnings of nursing care in Switzerland and in Zurich’s local history.
