Scientists of the University of Zurich can now publish Open Access articles in journals by Elsevier and Karger free of charge. The prerequisite for this is an employment by the University of Zurich or affiliated hospitals of the corresponding author of the submitted article. The author must give the e-mail address of the UZH (or the hospital) when submitting the article.

This agreement applies to all Karger and Elsevier journals, including Open Access journals. However, Elsevier does not include the journals of Cell Press, “The Lancet” and various society journals.

A detailed list of all eligible Elsevier journals and assistance with the submission process can be found on the HBZ website on Open Access publication funding under the respective publisher’s name. On this page you will also find an overview of all other publishers with whom you can claim publication funding.

Free Open Access publication with both publishers is made possible by a Read-and-Publish-Agreement. Read-and-Publish-Agreements on the one hand continue to secure the reading rights for the entire range of products offered by the publishers; on the other hand, they also ensure that researchers at the participating universities will be able to publish in journals with Open Access at no additional cost.

The agreement with Elsevier was negotiated by a delegation from swissuniversities in collaboration with the Consortium of Swiss Acadamic Libraries. As a result, an important milestone in the implementation of the national Open Access strategy was reached throughout Switzerland, as well as for the UZH. The agreement with Elsevier and Karger continues the series of Read-and-Publish-Agreements started with the Royal Society of Chemistry, which was the first of its kind to be finalised.
