General Information

Start of studies

The programme generally starts in the autumn semester. As the modules build on each other, an admission to start in spring is only approved in exceptional cases.

Enrolment & Admission

You may apply for admission at UZH online through the website of the Admission Office of the University of Zurich:

Online Application and Admission

After successful admission, enrolment through the Student Portal is necessary to study at UZH. All students must be enrolled for as long as they are claiming benefits from the University. These include, in particular, attending courses, receiving advice and support, using libraries and collections, using the Centre for IT Services, taking examinations and validating their diploma certificate.

Pre-course in mathematics

A mathematics pre-course is offered to new students each year before the start of the semester in September. Detailed information is available from the Department of Mathematics.

Regulations

The study programme at the Institute of Physics is regulated by the following documents:

Credit Points (ECTS)

All study achievemts are assessed according to the European Credit Transfer System ECTS.

The student workload comprises the total amount of work, i.e. attending and following up lectures and seminars, solving exercises, preparing and taking examinations, etc. The ECTS credit points are awarded to students for their work.

One credit point (ECTS) corresponds to a workload of about 30 hours. A full-time academic year with 60 ECTS credits thus comprises 1500-1800 hours. We recommend that regular students work towards 30 ECTS points per semester.
