This talk offers an overview about the development of Taiwan cinema from the 1950s to present. It focuses on the watershed moment in Taiwanese cinematic history – the 1980s – and explains what changes took place and why. It further explains the long-term impact of Taiwan New Cinema and Post-New Cinema on Taiwan’s film environment as a whole. The structural developments of the local film industry are presented as evidence for Taiwan’s cultural democratisation.
