Bachelor' thesis and graduation

Step-by-Step to Graduation

  • Start of Bachelor thesis
In order to be able to start your bachelor thesis, you must register using the "Registration bachelor thesis (PDF, 80 KB)" form.
Please send the completed form to the study coordinator (studium@physik.uzh.ch). The exact schedule (workload, deadline) for the bachelor thesis you arrange directly with your supervisor
  • Presentation
The bachelor thesis ends with a presentation. The presentation lasts 25 minutes and is held as
part of the «Seminar for Bachelor and Master thesis». Please make an appointment for the lecture with the study coordinator in good time. The student seminar usually takes place on Thurs-
days between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in room Y36-K-08, also during the semester breaks.
  • Submission of the bachelor thesis
The bachelor's thesis must be submitted no later than 2 weeks before the date of the bachelor's
examination. The supervisor receives a copy (either printed or electronic), the study coordinator
receives a PDF file of the bachelor thesis.
  • After you have given the presentation and the bachelor thesis has been assessed, fill out the
form "Grading sheet for the bachelor thesis (PDF, 79 KB)", have it signed by the supervisor and submit it to
    the study coordinator.
  • Application for a BSc degree in physics
After obtaining all the required credit points (usually after the bachelor's lecture), follow the link
“Application for Degree” in the student admin tool (link)

For supervisors

Thesis

The bachelor thesis in physics comprises 12 or 8 credits and lasts two months or 6 weeks (depending on the chosen program, i.e. BSc 180, 150 or 120). It is written in the 6th semester of the Bachelor's programme.
An information event is organized at regular intervals, here possible topics for Bachelor and Master theses are presented. Many of the research groups have also set up websites on which they present selected suggested topics or just pass by and ask within the research groups.

A list of suggested topics for bachelor theses can be found  here. We also recommend to ask directly in the research groups. You should complete your bachelor’s thesis during the last semester of your bachelor’s program, as it is required to be able to sign up for a master’s program.

You will find the form "Registration Bachelor Thesis" on the page forms and information sheets

Grading criteria for a master thesis (PDF, 147 KB)

For their bachelor’s thesis, students actively participate in the work of a research group in experimental or theoretical physics. Students record the results of their thesis in a written report and present them to their seminar group. Both the report and presentation will be graded.
The amount of work necessary for a bachelor’s thesis including preparation time (reading relevant literature and discussion with advisors) and compiling of the thesis and presentation is equivalent to 12 (8 for BSc 120) ECTS credits (meaning approximately 9 (6) weeks full time studies). You must design a time plan for your work with your advisor before beginning your project. Remember that the experimental work required for a thesis is intrinsically subject to its own schedule when making your time plan. When you have agreed upon a time plan, it must be recorded in writing along with the date on which you will begin and a definitive deadline.

Graduation

When a student successfully completes all requirements, they will receive the diploma “Bachelor of Science UZH in Physics.”

Student’s GPA for their bachelor’s degree is composed of a weighted average of all graded modules according to how many credit points they were worth. Grades from a student’s major in physics and minor are recorded separately.
